On The Road with Geoff Pevere and Donald Shebib

Renowned movie critic and author Geoff Pevere contributed the eighth installment of the Canadian Cinema series, published in association with the Toronto International Film Festival.  Donald Shebib’s Goin’ Down the Road just came out in June and everyone’s already talking about it.

Pevere’s engaging study of Goin’ Down the Road addresses a cultural mystery: how did Donald Shebib’s 1970 low-budget road movie about displaced Maritimers in Toronto become one of the most celebrated Canadian movies ever made? Featuring extensive interviews with the film’s key participants, Pevere provides behind-the-scenes history and explores how the movie’s meaning and interpretation have changed over time.

The Canadian Cinema series is designed to bring scholarly reflection on Canadian cinematic tradition and contemporary Canadian film to specialist and non-specialist audiences alike. And this new volume is no exception.

Here’s a roundup of what some people are saying about Geoff Pevere’s Donald Shebib’s Goin’ Down the Road:

Ralph Lucas at Northernstars.ca calls the book “an essential companion to the classic Canadian film. It should be required reading in every film course in Canada and elsewhere.”

Thom Ernst at TVO’s Satutrday Night at the Movies places Pevere’s book at #3 of the Top Five Books on Canadian Films by Canadian Authors.

The Rover did an interview with Geoff Pevere about his thoughts on the film and writing his new book.

To celebrate the launch of this new book, University of Toronto Press has teamed up with TIFF, The Revue Cinema, Union Pictures, and Word on the Street for An Evening with Geoff Pevere and Donald Shebib on August 21st, 2012.  The evening will feature a book launch reception, starting at 5:30pm and discussion of the film with Geoff Pevere and Donald Shebib, as well as screenings of both Goin’ Down the Road and the sequel, Down the Road Again, starting at 7pm.
