University of Toronto Press is pleased to announce that Stephen Ullstrom has been awarded The Purple Pen Award by the Institute of Certified Indexers for his indexing work on Strange Visitors: Documents in the History of Indigenous-Settler Relations in Canada from 1876, edited by Keith D. Smith and published by UTP’s Higher Education Division.
The Purple Pen Award is an annual competition for new indexers and is open to indexers who have completed a training course in the past five years and submit an index done for payment (in other words, not a practice index or pro bono job). Each entrant receives a detailed feedback report compiled from the feedback of three ICI-member judges. Indexes are judged on qualities such as exhaustivity, completeness, structure, consistency, accuracy, style, etc. A complete list of the standards used by the anonymous judging panel can be found under Best Practices on the ICI website.
Stephen Ullstrom wrote his first index in 2011 while working in-house for Harbour Publishing. He later completed the indexing course offered by Simon Fraser University, and has since been a freelance indexer for two years. Born in Toronto, ON, Stephen grew up in Taiwan, graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA in Creative Writing and Political Science, and currently works from Vancouver, BC.
