About University of Toronto Press
Founded in 1901, University of Toronto Press (UTP) is Canada’s leading academic publisher and one of the largest university presses in North America. UTP has published over 6,500 books, with well over 3,500 of these still in print. Each year, UTP publishes approximately 200 new scholarly, course, reference, and general interest books. The press has published a long list of notable authors, including Northrop Frye, Robertson Davies, Harold Innis, Marshall McLuhan, Yousuf Karsh, Carl Berger, Umberto Eco, Dorothy E. Smith, and Julia Kristeva. In addition, UTP has published landmark books in Canadian history, such as the Historical Atlas of Canada, the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, the Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples, and the History of the Book in Canada. With the publication of influential authors and outstanding research, as well as a continuing dedication to ground-breaking new scholarship, UTP has firmly established its reputation for excellence.
The Journals Division has been an important part of the press since its inception and has built a solid reputation for excellence in copyediting, typesetting, journal management, and support for our partner journal editors, editorial boards, and associations. The Journals Division is dedicated to innovation in publishing and the sustainability of scholarly journals. We work hand-in-hand with editors and associations to assist publications in achieving their goals in the most efficient and cost effective manner, resulting in major strides forward in areas such as online peer review systems and online advance publishing.
In 2008, University of Toronto Press acquired the publishing lists in anthropology, history, politics, and sociology from Broadview Press. At the same time, some Broadview editorial, sales and marketing, and management staff moved to UTP to create the dynamic new Higher Education Division. The division has since grown significantly but in its focus on publishing course books in the humanities and social sciences it continues to complement the Scholarly Publishing Division.
In partnership with the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto Press launched Rotman-UTP Publishing in 2008. This imprint is an outlet for disseminating the latest in business thinking with implications for practice. Books from Rotman-UTP Publishing target a broad audience of business people, opinion makers, and general readers with an interest in business, management, and economic issues.
In recent years, UTP has pursued its commitment to the dissemination of scholarship through bold new e-publishing initiatives. P-Shift, developed by UTP specifically for scholarly publishing, represents an innovative e-publishing solution, and includes an XML-based editorial workflow and production system, the capacity to create digital editions in a variety of formats, digital distribution, and digital asset management. UTP is intent on remaining a progressive presence in the dissemination of academic research, whether in print or digital format—or other media not yet in use.

Divisions of the Press
The Scholarly Publishing Division of University of Toronto Press publishes scholarly research in the humanities and social sciences, and in business and economics. Within Canada, UTP is widely recognized for its strength in history, political science, sociology, Indigenous studies, and cultural studies. Internationally, UTP is a leading publisher of Medieval and Renaissance studies, Italian, Iberian, Slavic, and Urban studies, and studies in book and print culture. Books published with the Scholarly Publishing Division have won many prestigious awards and are widely reviewed in both popular book review media and scholarly journals.
Rotman-UTP Publishing: Business Books from University of Toronto Press
Books from Rotman-UTP Publishing bridge research and practice, offering actionable learning for navigating today's complex business environment. The aim at UTP Higher Education is to publish materials for course use that are pedagogically valuable and that also contribute to ongoing scholarship. Working as a division within UTP offers exciting opportunities to pursue this goal and to meet the changing needs of teaching and scholarship in North America and further afield. We area first alternative to commercial textbook publishers, both for instructors looking for a refreshing change from the standard course book offerings, and for authors who value having creative and editorial input, as well as the personal attention provided by our editors.
The possibilities for rethinking how texts can be used in the classroom, along with new formats for their delivery, are endless, and UTP Higher Education looks forward to partnering with instructors and scholars in this innovative endeavour.
The Higher Education Division
UTP Higher Education actively markets UTP books, in person and online, to academics across Canada and the United States. All editorial, sales, marketing, and production duties are carried out through the UTP Higher Education office in Guelph, Ontario. The division has over 300 books in print.
At UTP Higher Education, our goal is to balance the pedagogical needs of the instructor with the pedagogical and financial needs of students. We hope to challenge negative perceptions of the textbook industry by serving as a viable alternative to large commercial publishers. One area in which we continue to focus our attention is book pricing.
We strongly believe in providing the best possible value by pricing our books competitively, often considerably below the competition. Our books are attractive, durable, and pedagogically sound, and do not carry a lot of expensive bells and whistles. Our commitment to cost-effectiveness is why we publish all course books in paperback and in many cases refrain from full-colour illustrations. We also believe that information about pricing should be readily available to students and instructors, and we make a point of providing up-to-date price information on our website.
We encourage instructors to make informed decisions about the books they choose to adopt for their courses, to educate their students about why they choose a particular book and its value to the overall course content, and to work with publishers to help create (and create demand for) pedagogically sound yet cost-effective course materials.

As a not-for-profit Canadian publisher, we focus on finding cost-effective solutions to maintain our journals’ high standards in an increasingly competitive journal publishing environment. BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Larry P. Alford
Larry P. Alford is Chief Librarian at the University of Toronto, a position he assumed in August 2011. The University of Toronto Library System is the largest research library in Canada and ranks third among North American university research libraries. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, he was Dean of University Libraries at Temple University where he was also responsible for the Temple University Press which publishes approximately 60 scholarly monographs per year.
Prior to joining the Temple Libraries in February 2005, he worked in a variety of positions in the libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill over a 30 year period including serving as Deputy University Librarian and Interim University Librarian. He has extensive experience in library budgeting and management, collection development, licensing, scholarly communication, digitization, technology implementation, facilities planning, and program planning.
Mr. Alford has also had extensive involvement in a variety of library cooperative activities. He served as a trustee of OCLC, Inc. from 2002-2014, and as its chair from 2007-2012. Headquartered in Dublin, Ohio, OCLC Online Computer Library Center is a non-profit organization with revenues of $200 million that provides computer-based cataloging, reference, resource sharing, and preservation services to 41,000 libraries in 82 countries and territories. Mr. Alford is an active member of the American Library Association (ALA), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL). He serves as an elected board member of ARL, and is the ARL Vice President, President-elect. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Canadiana.org, a Canadian non-profit providing digital access to Canadian heritage collections. From 2005-2011 he served as a board member of the Abraham Lincoln Foundation in Philadelphia, PA and has also served on other community boards.
Mr. Alford has spoken extensively on a variety of library topics. He holds a B.A. and M.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science in May 2005.
Senior Vice President, Human Resources
Oxford Properties Group
Ann Clavelle is the senior HR Business Partner at Oxford Properties and is responsible for leading Oxford’s HR function with a focus on attracting and developing talent across the organization. As a partner to Oxford’s various business lines, the HR team works closely with leaders to deliver a full range of human capital services and solutions. Prior to joining Oxford, Ms. Clavelle held progressively senior HR positions with Deloitte in both Canada and the United Kingdom. She is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and holds her Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation.
Her community service includes sitting on the Ontario Board of the Nature Conservancy of Canada and on the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees of Brescia College.
Kelly Dixon (*+) (see below for Committee participation legend)
Kelly has held executive roles in telecommunication, Internet, and digital media. Most recently, she was President of Workopolis, Canada’s largest career site that connects millions of Canadians with job opportunities from thousands of companies across the country. Prior to Workopolis, Kelly spent over 10 years at Bell Canada in positions that spanned Bell’s consumer and residential segment. Roles included Senior Vice President for Internet and Home Phone, VP Channel Marketing, VP Acquisition of Residential Services, and VP Marketing & Product Development of Wireless.
Kelly currently serves as a Board Advisor for Kanetix Ltd., Canada’s premier online comparison site for insurance, mortgages, and credit cards. Kanetix owns top web brands including Insurance Hotline, Rate Supermarket, ComparaSave, and Rates.ca. She joined the Board of the University of Toronto Press in the fall of 2013. Kelly holds a Business Degree from Ryerson University in Toronto.
Jake is an M&A partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, one of Canada’ top business law firms. Jake has been at Blakes his entire professional career and he regularly advises domestic and international clients, both public and private, on a full range of business matters, including cross-border and Canadian mergers and acquisitions. His primary area of focus is financial services but Jake also regularly advises clients in the information technology, manufacturing and consumer goods sectors. Jake regularly participates in panels on the topic of innovation in the financial services space and is interested in how incumbents . He is also on the board of the Canada Basketball Foundation. Jake is from Toronto but obtained his Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and then returned to Toronto to attend the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto.
Stephen Knight (*+¤)
Stephen is Canadian Country Director for First Annapolis Consulting, a US-based payments consulting firm. Stephen is responsible for developing client relationships across Canada, providing Canadian clients with local service and expertise, and advising US-based clients with Canadian operations and those contemplating Canadian expansion.
Prior to First Annapolis, Stephen was President & CEO of Loto Inc., which developed the capability for lottery operators to offer gaming and marketing through mobile devices within a more socially responsible framework.
From 1998 through 2008, Stephen was Senior Vice President of Hudson’s Bay Company, and was accountable for its credit card, gift card, loyalty, online sales programs, and B2B Olympic sales efforts.
For four years until 1998, Stephen was at Sears Canada, first in the role of National Manager of Finance, and then as National Manager of Innovation in the financial services division.
Following university, Stephen worked at Deloitte in auditing and in various other roles.
Stephen received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto, his Chartered Accountant designation, the Canadian Chartered Business Valuator designation, and the American Society of Appraisers designation.
Stephen has also served on many boards including: the MasterCard International Merchant Advisory Board, Kinark Child and Family Services, Argentium Resources Inc., Loto Inc., Aventum Insurance Agency, Heritage General Insurance, and Affinity Investments (now TD Insurance Meloche Monnex).
Elizabeth Lea (¤)
Elizabeth brings insights and experience developed and practiced across a number of sectors including public broadcasting, healthcare, electricity, and land use planning. She has contributed to organizations through a number of roles including senior Public Affairs practitioner, innovation strategist, and urban and regional planner. Elizabeth is a graduate of the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Waterloo.
Scott Mabury (*¤)
Professor Mabury holds a PhD in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry from the University of California, Davis. He first joined the University of Toronto as a faculty member in 1995 and became Director of the Analytical Laboratory for Environmental Science Research and Teaching in 1997. Professor Mabury served as Chair of the Department of Chemistry from 2003 until he was appointed to the position of Vice-Provost, Academic Operations on July 1, 2009.
Mabury was appointed as VP-University Operations January 1, 2012. Portfolios reporting to him include Information Technology Services, Facilities and Services, Ancillary Services, Office of Planning and Budget, and University Planning Design & Construction encompassing Campus and Facilities Planning, Project Development, Project Management, Design & Engineering, Leasing, and the Office of Space Management.
His current research interests are in the areas of environmental photochemistry, fluorochemicals, and atmospheric particles. He has written extensively on the environmental fate, disposition, and persistence of agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Mabury and his students have published over 160 scientific papers in refereed journals and he has presented his research at conferences, workshops, and seminars all over the world.
Professor Mabury spends weekends on his Northumberland Country Farm growing soybeans, wheat, and corn.
Anne Macdonald (*)
Anne Macdonald is the Director of Ancillary Services at the University of Toronto, where she is responsible for a number of self-funded service departments, including Foodservices, Trademark Licensing, Faculty Housing, Parking and Residences without college affiliation. Anne is an active member of the National Association of College Auxiliary Services, and serves on its Canadian committee, which works to strengthen professional development for ancillary professionals across the country. Before coming to the University of Toronto, she spent 15 years with the Corporation of Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall, where she managed frontline services, Catering and Retail.
Anne has served on several non-profit boards, including most recently the board of YWCA Toronto and Toronto’s Factory Theatre, where she held the role of Treasurer. She is also a member of the University of Toronto’s University Affairs Board, and Business Board.
Anne has an MBA and a Bachelor of Music in Performance, both from the University of Toronto, and an ARCT diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music. She remains active in the arts through volunteer work, and as a chorister with several Toronto choirs, including the gallery choir of the church of St. Mary Magdalene, and Pax Christi Chorale.
Catherine (Kate) Pearce (¤)
Kate Pearce is an experienced General Manager and senior leader with a strong track record of building new revenue and profit in the new media, internet, and consumer packaged goods industries in both the U.S. and Canada.
Most recently Kate was SVP of Product Management for the Internet and Home Phone businesses at Bell Canada in Toronto (2008-2009).
As a senior executive at America Online LLC based in Dulles VA from 2005-2008, Kate was responsible for growing the Global AOL Consumer Mobile and running the AOL Segments Business including various subscription businesses and portals. Prior to working in the U.S., Kate was a General Manager at AOL.
Kate’s early career experience was at Procter and Gamble (1985-1999), where she worked in Purchasing and later in Brand Management on a variety of global, regional, and local businesses.
Her background is in Engineering. Kate received an Honours Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from Queen's University at Kingston. She currently chairs Camp 1, a group of volunteer engineers responsible for facilitating iron ring ceremonies for new engineers graduating from four major Toronto universities, and has been a Professional Engineer since 1987. She also served as a Board Member on the ACA (Association of Canadian Advertisers) from 2002-2007.
Dilip Soman is a professor at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and the co-director of the university’s Behavioural Economics in Action research centre. He has also served at the Privy Council Office (Cabinet Office) of the Government of Canada, and on the faculties of The University of Colorado and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
He is a behavioural scientist and does research on behavioural economics and applications to welfare, policy and business. He is the author of over 50 research papers and several books, including the recently published The Last Mile (University of Toronto Press). Dilip also teaches an open online class (MOOC) entitled “Behavioural Economics in Action.”
When not working, he spends time on photography, reading, cricket, and taking weekends seriously.
Until her retirement in June 2015, Martha had spent 39 years at Ernst & Young LLP where she was a partner specialized in serving not-for-profit organizations.
Martha is now actively involved with a number of organizations. In addition to being a member of the board and Audit Committee at UTP, she is a member of the board and chairs the Finance Committee of several other not-for-profit organizations including George Brown College, MaRS Discovery District and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She is also a member of the board, chair of the Audit Committee and member of the Human Resources and Governance Committee of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. In addition, Martha is a member of CPA Canada’s Accounting Standards Oversight Council and the Standards Council of Imagine Canada.
Martha holds a B.Comm from the University of Toronto. She has an FCPA, FCA and an ICD.D designation.
Robert Vipond is Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. He earned a BA and MA from the University of Toronto (1975, 1977), pursued a doctorate at Harvard (1983), and returned to a tenure stream appointment at U of T. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1990 and to Professor in 2000.
Vipond’s scholarship focuses on the broad area of Canadian and American political development. His first book, Liberty and Community (SUNY, 1991), was a study of the idea of provincial autonomy in late-nineteenth-century English-Canadian political and constitutional thought. Subsequently, he has written widely on the development of Canadian and American federalism, constitutionalism, and debates about citizenship. He is also co-editor of, and contributed the lead essay to, The Comparative Turn in Canadian Political Science (UBC, 2008), and author of Making a Global City: How One Toronto School Embraced Diversity (University of Toronto Press, 2017).
In addition to his scholarship, Vipond has been a mainstay of the teaching staff in the Department of Political Science, for which he was recognized by the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1994. He has also served his Department, Faculty, and University in a variety of administrative positions: Undergraduate Chair in Political Science (1991-1994); Acting Chair of Political Science (1994-1995); Associate Dean, Development, Faculty of Arts and Science (1996-1997); Chair of Political Science (1997-2006); founding Director of the Centre for the Study of the United States (1999-2003); and founding Director, Dynamics of Global Change Collaborative PhD program (2008-present). He is currently Chair of the Manuscript Review Committee of the University of Toronto Press. Professor Vipond also served as Mackenzie King Chair of Canadian Studies at Harvard University (2002-2003) and is a Fellow of both Massey College and Victoria College.
John Yates - President, Publisher, and C.E.O. (*+¤)
John Yates was appointed President, Publisher, and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Toronto Press in 2004. Most recently, he spent twelve years with the legal publisher and information provider LexisNexis Butterworths Canada, first as Chief Financial Officer and then as President. Previously, he was Treasurer, and before that, Controller of Canada Publishing Corporation. He worked as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse after graduating from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce.

Carl Dair's Design with Type becomes the first Canadian book to be a recipient of one of the Book of the Year awards presented annually by the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
