About the Press

Founded in 1901, University of Toronto Press (UTP) is Canada’s leading academic publisher and one of the largest university presses in North America. Each year, UTP publishes approximately 180 new scholarly, course, and general interest books. UTP’s reputation for excellence stems from the publication of influential authors and outstanding research, as well as a continuing dedication to groundbreaking new scholarship.

In partnership with the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto Press launched Rotman-UTP Publishing in 2008. Books from Rotman-UTP Publishing target a broad audience of business people, opinion makers, and general readers with an interest in business, management, and economic issues. That same year, UTP also acquired Broadview Press’s history and social science lists, establishing a new course book division. In 2019, we acquired New Jewish Press and in 2020, launched the first titles in our Aevo UTP trade imprint.

The Journals Division has been an important part of the press since its inception and has built a solid reputation for excellence in copyediting, typesetting, journal management, and support for our partner journal editors, editorial boards, and associations. The Journals Division is dedicated to innovation in publishing and the sustainability of scholarly journals. We work hand-in-hand with editors and associations to assist publications in achieving their goals in the most efficient and cost-effective manner, resulting in major strides forward in areas such as online peer review systems and online advance publishing.

In 1975, UTP began providing warehousing and fulfilment to a small group of publishers and by 1987 the business had grown to more than 20 Canadian clients. In 1995 UTP Distribution began to provide distribution for American publishers and over the next five years added UK and Australian publishers. Currently UTP Distribution represents more than 70 book imprints for distribution in Canada, the United States, and around the world with facilities in Toronto with more than 70,000 square feet of warehouse space, and a Buffalo, New York, location for expediting incoming and outgoing US shipments.

In 1934, the University of Toronto Press Book Department began its retail operation and today the UofT Bookstore is a vibrant member of the University of Toronto and local community, hosting hundreds of books events each year.
