A Decolonizing Ear: Documentary Film Disrupts the Archive
April 23, 2024, 10-11 am (Mountain Time Zone), via Zoom
Please join us for a discussion of Olivia Landry’s book A Decolonizing Ear: Documentary Film Disrupts the Archive (University of Toronto Press, 2022) for the first Seminar Book Forum.
At this event, author Olivia Landry (Virginia Commonwealth University) will discuss her book with Berna Gueneli (University of Georgia), Nadjib Sadikou (Europa-Universität Flensburg), and Qinna Shen (Bryn Mawr College).
About the book: Sound recordings were a crucial instrument of colonial ethnography in the early twentieth century. Many of these recordings are preserved in the Lautarchiv (sound archive) of Berlin’s Humboldt University. Confronting these recordings with the ‘counterarchival work’ performed in films from the 1990s and 2000s, Landry assesses how contemporary art can critically respond to colonial violence. Combining the insights of a wide range of disciplines, A Decolonizing Ear speaks to scholars in film and sound studies as well as in archival, postcolonial, and German studies.
About the event series: The Seminar Book Forum curates discussions of new scholarly books that are of wide interest to the international German studies community. Each Forum consists of three critical statements on a given new book, followed by a response by the book’s author(s) or editor(s). Revised versions of the contributions to the live event are published in Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies. The Seminar Book Forum is moderated and edited by the Seminar book review editor, Martin Wagner (University of Calgary).
