Clearing Permissions

It is the author’s responsibility to clear permissions to reprint any copyrighted illustrations and text (beyond the limit of fair dealing/use). Permission must be received before your book can proceed into production.

  • Written permission must be obtained from the copyright holder for any tables, figures, graphs, photographs, drawings, cartoons, maps, or other images reproduced from another source, block quotations in excess of 300 words, and all poetry and song lyrics.
  • No permission is needed for material in the public domain or brief quotes that constitute fair dealing/use.
  • Permission should be cleared for world rights in all languages for both the print book and the ebook.

 

Authors may use the following sample Permission Request Letter:

Dear Permissions Manager,

 

I am writing to request permission to reprint the following material:

[include full description of the work to be reprinted, specifying title, author, publication year, page numbers, figure numbers, etc.]

 

in my forthcoming work:

The publisher requires nonexclusive world rights in all languages and media and for print and digital editions. I am happy to give your publication credit as the original source.

 

If you do not control the rights requested, please let me know to whom I should apply. Please use the release form provided below, returning the original request form to me. A copy is enclosed for your files.
