CHOICE’s Outstanding Academic Titles for 2012

An ancient Greek polis. The lush, verdant landscapes of rural Ireland. The corridors of political power in North America’s national capitals. And the intellectual world of Golden Age Spain, as the canonical writer Miguel de Cervantes would have known it.

What do these settings all have in common (apart from being dizzyingly fanciful travel destinations for 2013)? These places serve as the backdrops to four UTP books that were named Outstanding Academic Titles this week by CHOICE magazine.

CHOICE, “the premier source for reviews of academic books, electronic media, and Internet resources of interest to those in higher education,” does an annual round-up of the strongest titles reviewed in the previous year. Here are the UTP books cited this year, along with their reviews:

Atlas of the Irish Rural Landscape: Second Edition
Edited by F.H.A. Aalen, Kevin Whelan, and Matthew Stout

“The first edition of this atlas (1997) was widely recognized as one of the best works of its kind and an indispensable resource for Irish studies. This beautiful second edition is a worthy successor … A wealth of maps, diagrams, photographs, and paintings encourages slow reading and rereading of this rich text and presents scholarly material in ways accessible to many interests … There is much here for every reader interested in Ireland. Summing Up: Essential.”
– C.W. Wood Jr.

Cervantes, Literature and the Discourse of Politics
By Anthony J. Cascardi

“Cascardi adds to his impressive resumé this study of Cervantes as a political thinker. The dual focus here is political theory within literature and the role of literature within the political spectrum … Each of Cascardi’s nine chapters is rich, suggestive, and learned. This book is a must. Summing Up: Essential.”
– E.H. Friedman

Dependent America?: How Canada and Mexico Construct US Power
By Stephen Clarkson and Matto Mildenberger

“This excellent book makes an important contribution to the literatures on regionalism in the Americas and the nature of US power in the era of globalization. … Clarkson and Mildenberger persuasively show that Canada and Mexico play a key role in ‘constructing’ US global power … Summing Up: Highly recommended.”
– M.E. Carranza

On Oligarchy: Ancient Lessons for Global Politics
Edited by David Edward Tabachnick and Toivo Koivukoski

“… the series [in which this book is the third] serves as a fine illustration of the continuing relevance of political philosophy to the understanding of contemporary politics. … This thought-provoking collection of essays is enthusiastically recommended for specialists and general readers alike. Summing Up: Highly recommended.”
– M. Harding

We’d like to congratulate each of these authors and editors on achieving this recognition.
