Please note: We do not publish new fiction, poetry, or conference proceedings.

If the editor is interested in considering your book, you will be asked to submit your manuscript for more formal review. Manuscripts will be assessed by experts in the field. If the reports are positive, the manuscript may be presented to our internal Publishing Committee. Manuscripts in humanities and social sciences approved by this committee are then submitted for the approval of our Manuscript Review Committee, an external committee consisting of senior scholars from the University of Toronto. Approved proposals and manuscripts in business are submitted to the Rotman-UTP Publishing Advisory Board, an external committee consisting of senior academics from the Rotman School of Management.


As a not-for-profit university press with the goal to publish affordable books for undergraduate students, UTP is a first alternative to commercial textbook publishers. If you are an instructor who is looking for a refreshing change from the standard course book offerings, consider publishing your next (or your first!) textbook with UTP.

We want you to have a say in the development of your book. Your experience with UTP will include personal attention from our editors, quality book production, and proactive sales and marketing at campuses across North America.

Proposals for course books should be between 5 and 15 pages long and should include the following:

1. Description of and rationale for the proposed whole, including a table of contents.

2. Discussion of the ways in which the project speaks to current teaching practices and scholarly interests:

  • What are the challenges in teaching the content of related courses? How does the proposed text speak to these challenges?
  • Is the treatment of the subject matter expansive, conceptual, or practical?
  • Is it at the cutting edge or a better restatement of existing knowledge?
  • What distinctive approaches to coverage of specific topics will your project offer?
  • Are there topics that others in the field may expect to find but which you will not include? Why not?

3. Discussion of the project’s potential market:

  • What is the primary market for the project?
  • What are the secondary markets for the project?

4. If primary sources are included, discussion of relevant textual and translation issues.

5. Overview of competing or complementary books.

6. Proposed date of completion.

7. Tentative title.

8. Estimated total length of the manuscript (approximate word count).

9. List of non-textual items (e.g. charts, maps, illustrations, video clips, podcasts, etc.):

  • How will these non-textual items be delivered (e.g. in the text of the book, in an appendix, on a website, etc.)?
  • Do you control publication or re-publication rights for these materials?

10. Personal qualifications, including a discussion of the proposer’s unique qualifications for undertaking the project as well as the proposer’s CV.

Humanities Series: 

International Themes and Issues
This is a joint series by the Canadian Historical Association and the University of Toronto Press. Each volume provides a concise, focused, comprehensive overview of a topic or issue that is of international significance and broad interest in the study of history. Rather than coming from a single national viewpoint, the approach is comparative. Page count is 200-250 pages. The series editor is Pierre Yves Saunier, Université Laval.

Readings in Medieval Civilizations and Cultures
These readers are born of a desire for a richer, multi-layered approach to the social, political, religious, economic, and intellectual history of the Middle Ages. The series seeks to provide students and scholars with collections of translated primary sources, including many to which they would not normally or easily have access. Each volume contains a mixture of standard documents (those which are central to the field and without which the volumes would be incomplete) and representative texts (those which are often less known and yet reveal important and interesting aspects of the Middle Ages). Both period and thematic readers are included. The series editor is Paul Edward Dutton, Simon Fraser University.

Companions to Medieval Studies
This series consists of relatively short books of 100-125 pages designed to serve several functions: to act as general introductions to important medieval subjects covered in many college and university undergraduate classrooms; to accompany and complement the source books which appear in the Readings in Medieval Civilizations and Cultures Series; and to act as handy reference books on a topic as students and instructors make their way through courses on the subject (whether or not they are using the relevant reader). Rethinking the Middle Ages 
Rethinking the Middle Ages is committed to re-examining the medieval era: its themes, institutions, people, and events. These are short studies, overviews of a particular topic or theme that provoke discussion among students and scholars, inviting them to think about the problems and issues of the Middle Ages in new and unusual ways. Social Sciences Series: 

Teaching Culture: UTP Ethnographies for the Classroom 
The Teaching Culture series offers an opportunity to take a road less travelled in academic publishing. The series offers book-length ethnographies that are conceived of, and developed especially for, undergraduate use. We seek manuscripts that reflect current scholarship but that differ from traditional scholarly monographs in their dedication to ethnography that is narrative-driven and conceptualized specifically for use in the undergraduate classroom. The series editor is John Barker, University of British Columbia.

Anthropological Insights 
The Anthropological Insights series offers an opportunity to bring contemporary scholarship to an undergraduate audience. Ethnographically grounded, and conceptualized as pedagogical tools, these very short books (80-100 pages or 35,000-45,000 words) provide instructors and students with foundational information about key topics and ethnographic regions. Competitively priced, the books can accompany and complement more comprehensive textbooks, readers, and ethnographies. They can also stand on their own as handy reference works or serve as the main component in class modules. The series editor is John Barker, University of British Columbia.

This groundbreaking new series realizes ethnographic research in graphic novel form. It speaks to a growing interest in comics as a powerful narrative medium and to a number of trends in anthropology, including a desire for a more imaginative and collaborative ethnography and for engaging with a broader public on contemporary issues. The goal is to create scholarly-informed narratives that are accessible, open-ended, aesthetically rich, and that foster greater cross-cultural understanding. Books in the series combine the power of ethnographic research with the unique elements of comics as a sequential art, using page, panels, gutters, visuals, dialogue, captions, line, and lettering to tell the story. Beyond the graphic narrative, each book in the series will include a reader’s guide with discussion questions (perfect for book clubs!), background information on the research behind the story, and a discussion of the challenges and benefits of transforming research into graphic novel form. When submitting your proposal please be sure to include the following:

  • A general description of the journal that includes subject area(s) covered as well as an analysis of its contribution to scholarship in the field and its target audience.
  • Publication frequency (e.g., quarterly, annual).
  • A description of the expected market for the journal, including information on related scholarly organizations.
  • Information on competing journals in the field and an explanation of how your title is unique.
  • Curricula vitae for the editor(s) and a list of editorial board(s) members.
  • Report on income from all sources (from host institution, granting agencies, sponsors, print and electronic subscriptions, single issue sales, advertising sales, list rentals, subsidiary rights, sublicensing, etc.).
  • Current subscriber information, including numbers of individual and institutional domestic and foreign subscribers as well as current subscription prices and foreign postage surcharges.
  • Readership/usage statistics for online material.
  • Details of any standing bookstore accounts, distribution agreements, secondary publishing agreements, cooperative web or sales agreements (e.g., Project Muse, CCC, JSTOR, ProQuest).
  • Details of any current production arrangements (e.g., copyediting, proofreading, printing).
  • Two sample issues and access to online site.
  • Plans for upcoming special issues.
  • A list of where the journal is indexed and abstracted.
  • Impact factor, if known.
  • An inventory report on back stock and an indication of what your current publisher will expect for it (e.g., transfer without charge, sell at unit cost, etc.).
  • Details on licensing rights for all previously published content, at both the article and volume levels (who owns? will the rights transfer?).

For new titles, please include the following:

  • Proposed publication frequency and start date.
  • Information on the level of sponsor support for the journal.
  • A description of the journal’s focus and an overview of standard content and sections (e.g., articles, book reviews, review essays, commentaries, multi-media).
  • Curricula vitae for the editor(s) and a list of editorial board(s) members and affiliations.
  • Information on competing journals in the field and an explanation of how your title is unique.
  • Content (or examples of content) for the first two volumes.


UTP offers a publishing partnership that will allow you to participate in all decisions relating to how the journal is managed, including subscription pricing, pages produced, journal size, colour page sections, online features, and marketing strategy. Each year we will meet, in person or online, to plan for the upcoming year; we will discuss all aspects of the journal with you, and will develop a budget based on the agreed plan. As the year progresses and issues are published, UTP will send a report detailing the revenues and expenses associated with each issue.
