UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO BOOKSTORE LAUNCHES THE FIRST "ATM FOR BOOKS" IN TORONTO

The Espresso Book Machine lets students, faculty, local libraries, and the public print digital books, public domain, or self-published material with a library-quality, paperback format in minutes, one copy at a time.

The University of Toronto Bookstore can now print digital books from over four million titles in its digital database, plus it can print self-published, library-quality paperbacks one copy at a time, for just pennies a page, using the only Espresso Book Machine™ in Toronto.

Dubbed the "ATM for Books" by Time Magazine, the Espresso Book Machine™ (EBM) can print, bind, and trim complete paperback books with full-colour covers in about four minutes per book. Through EspressNet, the EBM's custom software, the EBM can print from a library of four million current or public domain digital titles. A partnership with the University of Toronto Libraries will provide an affordable print-on-demand solution for its own extensive collection of digital titles. It also allows rare texts which are no longer in copyright to be back in production, one copy at a time with no wait times, searchable online at www.uoftbookstore.com.

University of Toronto Press' VP Retail, Chad Saunders says, "With Toronto being such a cultural centre, authors can self-publish their own books, sketches, poetry, and more, one copy at a time on our new EBM service, branded BookPOD. It's a very low-risk, economical, easy, and environmentally-friendly way to publish. Historically a small print run could cost thousands to a budding writer. Now for 200 pages it can be as low as $12 a copy plus a one-time setup fee and authors can print any number of copies with no minimum."

"This is a really exciting opportunity for both book lovers and aspiring authors. The bookstore of tomorrow will be very different than the bookstore of today and technology plays an important role. Rather than waiting for change to happen, we plan to lead and make it happen" Saunders says.

The U of T Bookstore continues to innovate and purchasing the EBM is a step toward having all the pieces in place for digital books. In a survey conducted by the bookstore earlier this year, 87% of students want some portion of a digital book also available in print and a significant number want more than half of the book printed.
