For Immediate Release
March 25, 2021
John Yates, President, Publisher, and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Toronto Press (UTP), announced today that he will be retiring from the company for personal reasons.
"As of June 2021, I will have spent 17 years in this position," says Yates. "Whether or not the pandemic is over by then, I can confidently say that together with my leadership team, managers, and staff of the Press, we have successfully navigated through the most challenging time in the history of UTP, and are heading into a bright future."
"During his tenure, Yates oversaw the expansion of UTP's retail, distribution, and publishing divisions. "It's been extremely satisfying to see a great group of talented people take the business forward in such a positive way, and defy gravity time and again," he says. "The team has made big strides in every aspect of the business with the addition of great authors, clients, and customers, all supported by the best team in the industry."
Before joining UTP, Yates spent 12 years with the legal publisher LexisNexis Butterworths Canada, first as Chief Financial Officer and then as President.
The date of Yates's retirement from UTP will be determined by the recruitment process, and will most likely occur over the summer or early fall. Recruitment for his successor has begun and will be managed by Bedford Consulting.
