About Us

Founded in 1901, University of Toronto Press is Canada’s leading scholarly publisher and one of the largest university presses in North America. In 2026, UTP is celebrating 125 years of publishing world-leading scholarship that informs, broadens perspectives and promotes critical dialogue.

With the mission to connect ideas for a better world, UTP operates three business units. The Publishing Division publishes 250 new book titles per year and 80 journals, with a backlist that includes over 10,000 book titles and 75,000 journal articles. UTP is widely recognized internationally for its content covering a vast array of disciplines in medical and health sciences, business, law, education, political science and policy, sociology, general history, philosophy, and literature, among other areas.

In 1975, UTP began providing warehousing and fulfillment to a small group of Canadian publishers. Today, UTP’s Distribution Division has grown to manage the distribution for more than 250 publishers and imprints in Canada, the United States, and around the world. UTP’s Educational Resources department distributes hundreds of resources from leading educational publishers, providing essential materials for guidance counsellors, teachers, cooperative educators, career practitioners, human resources professionals, and English as a second language and literacy professionals.

UTP’s retail presence started in 1934 as a book department at the University of Toronto. Since then, the University of Toronto Bookstore has evolved into a dynamic hub for students, faculty, and the wider community. With four physical locations, including stores at University of Toronto’s three campuses, a specialized Faculty of Law offering, as well as a global online shop, the Bookstore serves a community of over 100,000 students and 16,500 faculty, offering course materials, including new, used, digital, and custom course packs, as well as an extensive selection of branded merchandise, apparel, and gifts. The flagship location in the historic Koffler Student Centre at St. George campus is a vibrant space housing Canada’s largest medical bookstore, and a curated collection of general interest and trade books.

UTP’s co-branding partnerships highlight the University of Toronto’s identity while delivering both quality and value. Recent partnership initiatives include a line of apparel featuring the popular brand lululemon, as well as the renewal of a multi-year partnership with the popular brands Roots and OVO, October’s Very Own.

UTP is dedicated to working with global partners who share the same commitment to develop and deliver exceptional scholarship and disseminate knowledge broadly.
