Toronto, Canada and Tokyo, Japan – University of Toronto Press (UTP) and MHM Limited are pleased to announce a new publishing partnership dedicated to expanding the global reach and impact of scholarship in Japanese Studies. Together, the organizations will collaborate on the publication and dissemination of outstanding scholarly works that deepen understanding of Japan’s history, culture, society, politics, literature, and intellectual traditions.
The partnership brings together two organizations committed to scholarly excellence and international knowledge exchange. Through this collaboration, UTP and MHM will support the publication of innovative research by established and emerging scholars, making important contributions to the growing field of Japanese Studies accessible to readers around the world.
The initiative will include a range of scholarly publications, including monographs, edited collections, and interdisciplinary works that offer diverse perspectives on Japan and its place in the world. The partnership aims to foster academic dialogue across borders while strengthening connections between scholars in Japan, North America, and the wider international research community.
“Japanese Studies is a vibrant and increasingly interdisciplinary field that offers critical insights into questions of history, culture, governance, identity, and international relations,” said Antonia Pop, Vice-President, Publishing, University of Toronto Press. “We are thrilled to partner with MHM to support the publication of outstanding scholarship and to create new opportunities for collaboration between researchers and academic communities around the world.”
The new partnership reflects a shared recognition of the importance of international scholarly exchange at a time when understanding diverse intellectual traditions is more important than ever. By combining MHM’s expertise and networks with UTP’s global publishing, marketing, and distribution capabilities, the collaboration will help ensure that groundbreaking research reaches scholars, students, and interested readers worldwide.
“We are very pleased to work with University of Toronto Press on this important initiative,” said Mark Gresham, Managing Director, MHM Limited. “Together, we will work to create a strong platform for the dissemination of high-quality Japanese Studies scholarship, encouraging new conversations and fostering greater understanding of Japan across academic and public audiences.”
The partnership will also encourage interdisciplinary approaches to Japanese Studies, supporting works that connect Japan’s past and present to broader global issues, including cultural exchange, social transformation, intellectual history, environmental change, and international engagement.
As global interest in Japan continues to grow, UTP and MHM believe that rigorous scholarly publishing has an important role to play in advancing research, promoting cross-cultural understanding, and ensuring that new knowledge reaches audiences far beyond national boundaries.
