UTP DONATING ALL PROFITS FROM ITS BLACK STUDIES BOOKS TO BLACK LIVES MATTER TORONTO

For Immediate Release

June 8, 2020

University of Toronto Press (UTP) is committed to publishing books that not only advance intellectual and academic conversations but contribute to the growth of society and culture. We therefore stand in solidarity with those around the world who are speaking out against the ongoing systemic oppression and violence against communities of colour and Black people in particular. UTP acknowledges and supports this: Black Lives Matter.

UTP is outraged by the death of George Floyd at the hands Minnesota police officers. We’re equally enraged by the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, and far too many others. Our hearts are also sickened by the relatively more mundane acts of prejudice and discrimination that happen every day in our country, cities, and communities. By joining forces, as individuals and organizations, we can dismantle white supremacy in all its forms.

As Canada’s largest scholarly publisher, we believe that words carry weight. Our books foster a better understanding of the world and how people think, plan, and govern. UTP has a long history of amplifying voices from traditionally marginalized groups.

UTP is committing 100% of the profits this year from the sale of its Black Studies books – a list that puts the challenges that Black people face everyday in context and directly confronts the sociopolitical underpinnings of racism today – to support Black Lives Matter Toronto.
